First, a little about US!
Previously ScareAtorium and then 13th Floor, Fear Columbus came to fruition when we (Nick and Jess) got to opportunity to purchase the business in the heart of the pandemic and about six months after we got married (a very strong start). Although a huge risk, this was something we had been wanting for such a long time. Nick has been creating Haunted Houses since he was 5, starting in his parents backyard and eventually opening The Fear Experience in Cleveland, OH. As luck would have it, Jess was dragged through Nick’s Haunt one night in 2011 and was instantly hooked. She started acting at the Fear Experience a month later, falling immediately in love with the industry…and then Nick a year later. The rest is history.
After 6 seasons in Cleveland, The Fear Experience closed in 2015 due to losing the lease. We moved from Cleveland in 2017 because we love it here! Nick opened his marketing firm and Jess got to work with the team who brought 13th Floor to Columbus. When we got the opportunity to take over the business, we just couldn’t pass it up! Ironically the scariest thing we’ve ever done due to the state of the world, but it turned out to be even better than we ever imagined and the response from the community has been overwhelming in the best way.
Since bringing Fear to Columbus, we have been listening to feedback and are constantly striving to make this attraction and our events the best they can be for everyone. We want our customers to get an incredible show and truly want our staff to look forward to coming to work. We couldn’t be more grateful for what we’ve been able to pull off and are beyond thankful for our staff who have all been such a massive part in the growth of our small business…because we definitely don’t do this alone! The coolest part of all of this has been seeing this industry work it’s magic on our team. We’ve gotten to see people come out of their shell, embrace themselves, and find their tribe. We’ll never get tired of watching their faces light up when they get a good scare or recognize their passion for this. We’re in this business because we truly love what we do and we hope we can bring a little bit of this magic to you for years to come.

Working at Fear Columbus
Going through Haunted Houses is great, but nothing in the world beats being a part of the team that brings them to life. If you’re looking for a unique job with a fun, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere, we would love to hear from you! We’re always accepting applications for our Halloween Season and Off Season Events. This is a massive show to fill and we want to make sure it’s the biggest and best it can be while also being accommodating to our team (rest is important, y’all). Being a seasonal business centered around Halloween, this is not meant to be a full time job and more of a fun way to make some extra money.
We do everything we can to make sure our staff can balance their lives outside of this while also getting to do what they love most! A large majority of our staff returns for all the off-season events, allowing us to be more flexible with hours and really pack our shows. While we do ask that you are able to work a majority of our operational days, it’s not a deal breaker and we can usually accommodate the vast majority of schedules.
Although we would do this every day if we could, Halloween only comes once a year. However, we make sure to open our doors as much as possible for different events outside of Haunt Season-like Valentine’s Day, our summer laser tag event, Nightmare Combat, and our holiday event, Krampus…and we really like to go all out with them.
Our staff is incredibly diverse! We range from 16-70, hold a number of different full time occupations, and come from all different backgrounds and walks of life. We work hard to make this a welcoming, safe, and fun atmosphere for all (have you ever seen a bunch of monsters in a dance circle throwing it back to Cardi B?!). Though this is a job, we fully believe in having a good time and enjoying your experience here. So…whether you’re looking for a Haunt to call home all year, someone who wants more opportunities to Haunt through the year, or someone who’s just genuinely curious about what this whole industry is, we want to hear from you!
Listed below are the positions we have available with descriptions. Check out what’s right for you and send in your application! We can’t wait to connect 🙂
Are you always thinking of ways to scare your friends and family? Why not get paid to do it? We’re always looking to expand our team of actors for the Halloween Season and Off Season Events. As an actor, you get to bring the attractions to life! We deck you out in a costume and makeup and place you in a scene complete with it’s own sound and light show tailored just to your scene and character. We have an array of positions available, including scene actors, queue line actors, and puppeteers. We are ADA compliant have designed the show so that anyone can do this! While the ideal candidate doesn’t need any prior Haunt or Theatrical experience, they should be able to be moderately active for 4-6 hours (we do include breaks).Teaching you how to scare someone is easy as long. as you can work with simple instructions. Once hired, you become eligible to work all future events with us. We love our staff and work hard to make sure this is fun, welcoming, and safe environment for all!
Applicants for Performance should note that this can be a disorienting atmosphere to some, including elements of fog, strobes, dark areas, and loud sounds/music. We have a wide variety of scenes and can be fairly accommodating, but one or more of these elements will be present in every scene. While we can be pretty flexible (working around full time jobs or other commitments), we do ask that you’re available to work most operational days but are always open to discussing! Due to the nature of our business centering around Halloween, this is a seasonal position. However, we do have plenty of year round opportunities such as Valentine’s Day, Our Summer Laser Tag Event, Blackout, and Krampus on top of the Halloween season… so you can get your fix in all throughout the year!
Event Staff Application
If you’re still an avid fan of Halloween but getting in costume isn’t your jam, we would love to have you join our Event crew! This is the perfect position for someone who’s passionate about horror and great at working with customers. Although the actors keep the attractions running, we rely on you to work with the guests before and after they experience show. As a member of our Event Staff, you would be responsible for all things customer related. We have a wide variety of positions available, including crowd directors, ticket scanners, photo booth operators, and Fear Gear store attendants (just to name a few). Our main goal is to make sure our guests are having the best time, so the ideal candidate should be great with people, friendly, outgoing, and eager to help. We’re ADA compliant and an equal opportunity employer. We’re all about self expression, so come as you are…tattoos, piercings, bright hair, and all!
Applicants for Event Staff should note that, while not working in the actual attractions, some elements may still be present (just not as intensely) such as fog and loud music. We provide all staff with earplugs and, when necessary, microphones to make communication in this environment easier. This job will keep you quite active. In some instances, light lifting for set up and tear down may be required, but we’re easily able to work with anyone’s needs. While we can be pretty flexible (working around full time jobs or other commitments), we do ask that you’re available to work most operational days but are always open to discussing! Makeup Artist Application
We wouldn’t have monsters if it wasn’t for our incredible makeup team! As a Makeup Artist for Fear Columbus, we trust you to turn our human staff into creatures of the night. The ideal candidate should have some sort of experience with SPFx makeup, although Haunted House experience is not necessary. Although we do spread staff out over a few makeup artists a night, you should be able to work quickly and efficiently enough to make sure all acting staff is ready to go on time. Reference photos and predetermined looks will be provided to keep things moving once it’s time to execute and we love seeing and hearing your ideas! We also ask that you can keep you station and space clean and organized and be able to adequately communicate any inventory needs. Please make sure to upload any applicable work before submitting your application. We have a great makeup space and supply all needed makeup and materials. Currently, we do use predominantly airbrush to apply makeup, but this is not a necessary skill to have in order to apply…we’re all about growing our skillset here and can easily train you on the machine. Other methods of makeup include latex, prosthetics, masks, and gore. We obviously have our Halloween Season but also offer a variety of events throughout the year which calls for a few different styles of makeup. Most of our makeup artists do jump in to act or work as a member of Event Staff during out operational hours and once makeup is done. This is totally not a requirement, but we do like to offer it as a way to get more hours or explore other aspects of the Haunt if that’s something that interests you.
